About SLM

SLM Bodywork is an advanced, unique form of Remedial massage and acupressure based largely on an ancient art of healing from the East. It was made popular by Steve Lockhart in the early 90s and has been rapidly growing in popularity since that time.

SLM bodywork includes a full body flowing massage that focuses on many critical parts of the body to put length and function back into the muscles to balance the body, allowing it to function normally.

SLM bodywork is far from being like the another forms of Remedial Massage. Rather it is a powerful combination of techniques and knowledge that helps rid the body of pain and injury.

A fully trained SLM Practitioner is skilled at knowing how different muscles in the body are connected and how problems in one area can refer pain to a totally different area. Whereas Remedial Massage is about taking tension from the muscles, SLM Bodywork includes, stimulating flaccid muscles through various nerve lines, restoring length and function to permanently contracted muscles and removing the muscle imbalances so pressure is released from joints.

SLM Practitioners are also trained to recognise when a body requires attention to diet and/ or exercise before it is likely to respond fully to bodywork. This combined knowledge that forms the basis of a more holistic approach to a problem, means SLM Bodywork is highly effective in the large majority of cases of chronic and acute pain and injury, even when Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Remedial Massage have failed to take the pain away.

Anyone can learn this unique form of therapy from the beginner through to the qualified massage professional by completing the Professional Myotherapy Training program that has been released on DVDs and text. You can find out all about it here.

There are also hands on training conferences available during the year and you can find out more about them here.

WHY People need SLM Bodywork

From stress and tension through to acute or chronic pain and injury SLM Bodywork has a solution that suits every need. It can be performed as a fantastic full body massage or a detailed body changing experience, depending on the level to which it is carried out.

Through a variety of activities or just our lifestyle in general, the body tends to get ‘out of balance’. Often what starts out as a small problem, builds up over time and before you know it a chronic pain condition has surfaced and stayed or an acute injury happens out of nowhere

Muscle imbalance causes the structure of the body to be loaded up unevenly, some joints and muscles having to work harder than they should and some working less as you go about your days activities. In time the body starts compensating for this uneven state and you start to lose flexibility and can gain weight as the circulation
slows. At some point in the body where the pressure from the imbalance is at it’s greatest you will invariably end up with pain.

To fix pain you need to work at a deep structural level quite differently to a normal deep tissue or remedial massage, to remove any imbalance that are present. The goal of the SLM treatment is to return the body to how it was months or even years earlier, before a problem came about.

By fixing an imbalance you invariably fix the cause of the problem providing long term relief from  pain. The full body, deep tissue, incredibly effective SLM Bodywork techniques are one of the best ways you can safely achieve this. Most conventional treatments these days treat symptoms and keep doing the same thing even when it clearly isn’t working.

Does SLM Work for Everybody?

The health, strength and suppleness of our body goes a long way to determine how significant this imbalance is and how easy or difficult it will be to remove. That is why a therapy shouldn’t just manipulate the body but rather look at ways, through diet, exercises and self treatment to make the body more responsive to the professional
muscle work.

It doesn’t matter what your lifestyle, everyone has occasions when their body is in pain or a state of dysfunction. SLM bodywork is a fast and effective way of returning the body to its normal state while treating the cause of the problem, rather than just the symptom, so that the results last.
